Bobby Fischer Off to Oklahoma For Chess Tilt
A 13-year-old Brooklyn boy is on his way to Oklahoma City to-day to compete in the 57th Annual U.S. Open Chess Championship. Bobby Fischer, of 560 Lincoln Place, Brooklyn, forged his way to victory in the 1956 Junior Chess Championship of the United States at the Manhattan Chess Club.
He will compete for the first prize of $1,000, July 16-28 at the Oklahoma Biltmore Hotel. He will compete against 150, mainly adults. Prizes in the tournament will total $3,000.
Bobby is the youngest to hold the Junior Chess Championship title, won in a week-long competition in Philadelphia, against 27 boys from 12 states and Canada.
Mr. and Mrs. E.A. Hartford, 1920 North Indiana Avenue, Oklahoma City, have offered to care for Bobby during the two weeks of the tournament.
