Chess News: Thirteen Year Old Junior Chess Champion and U.S. Open Championship
Thirteen-Year-Old Wins! — The U.S. Junior Championship, held in Philadelphia, has been won by Bobby Fischer, age 13, of Brooklyn, N.Y. thus setting a record for this event. A member of the Manhattan C.C., Bobby Fischer is the youngest player ever to hold the U.S. Junior title.
Leading scores were: Bobby Fischer 8½-1½; C. Henin and A. Feuerstein, each 8-2; S. Geller, 7-3; and G. Baylor and T. Levine, each 6-4.
U.S. Open Championship — U.S. champion Arthur B. Bisguier and J. T. Sherwin (both of New York) finished at the head of the U.S. Open Championship tournament, held in Oklahoma City, Okla. last month.
Scores of the leaders were: Bisguier and Sherwin, each 9½-2½; R. Steinmeyer (St. Louis), 9-3; Bobby Fischer, A. Di Camillo (Philadelphia), E. Mednis (New York), A. F. Saidy (Queens, L.I.) and S. Popel (Detroit), 8½-3½ each. There were 101 entries.
