Chess master Robert J. Steinmeyer of St. Louis, Mo. continued to lead all contenders in the 57th annual tournament of the United States Chess federation in the Biltmore hotel.
With six straight victories, Steinmeyer played to a draw Monday night with Anthony Saidy of Douglaston, N.Y. to gain a half point and lead with a total score of 6½ points.
Saidy is tied for second with James Sherwin, New York City, each having six points. Sherwin gained the second place tie by defeating Daniel Fischheimer of Chicago Monday night.
Arthur Bisguier, New York City, is fourth with 5½ points after winning over Jack O'Keefe, Ann Arbor, Mich. Tied for fifth with five points each are Edmar Mednis, New York City, and I. Theodorovitch, Toronto, Canada, who battled to a draw.
The game between 13-year-old Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn and Kenneth R. Smith of Dallas was adjourned. Defending women's champion Sonja Graf Stevenson of Los Angeles played to a draw with Blake Stevens of Austin, Texas.
