Evans Edges Sherwin To Carry Chess Open
Larry Evans, 24-year-old New York City film producer and No. 2 ranking U. S. chess player, last night won the first Canadian open chess championship, defeating fellow New Yorker James T. Sherwin.
The 10-round tournament, which attracted 88 entries from Canada, the United States and Guatemala, saw Evans finish in a point-total tie with young William Lombardy, also of New York. Evans, however, won the title on the basis of a pre-determined tie-breaking system involving the points of vanquishing opponents.
Evans had seven wins, one loss and two draws for eight points while Lombardy accumulated his eight points on six wins and four draws. The pair split first and second prize money of $800.
Geza Fuster, Toronto and Ontario chess champion, won the speed chess crown for the second consecutive year.
The round-robin tournament, in which players were given 10 seconds to make their moves, was held prior to the final round.
Fuster had won the 1956 speed title in Ottawa.
