World of Chess: U.S. Champ Wins Oklahoma Tourney
U.S. chess champion, Arthur B. Bisguier, has won the $1,000 USCF Open tourney played in Oklahoma City. James Sherwin was second on the median tie-break; both scored 9½-2½. Sherwin is the New York State champion. Bob Steinmeyer of St. Louis was third at 9-3. Five players scored 8½-3½ including 13-year-old Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn who can point to this major tournament as evidence that he has acquired his chess majority. Bobby's score represents five wins, seven draws and no losses.
Tournament director Kenneth Harkness tells us that the youngster was matched with the best as indeed he had to be in the Swiss System. He was the feature attraction in Oklahoma City, since he came as U.S. Junior champion.
