Fischer Sets Back Seidman In Chess
Bobby Fischer, 13 years old, of Brooklyn, last night defeated Herbert Seidman, champion of the Marshall Chess Club in their postponed game from the fifth round of the Lessing J. Rosenwald Trophy chess tournament at the Manhattan Chess Club.
The talented Erasmus Hall high school student had the white side of a Reti opening and won in 39 moves.
Fischer made effective use of his knight against the weakened pawn position on the queen's side of the board. He captured one of Seidman's pawns on the twenty-first move and a second pawn, five moves later.
Pressed for time, Seidman sacrificed a piece in a vain attempt to create a diversion.
