Mednis Advances In Chess Tourney
Beats Turner in 78 Moves to Gain Third-Place Tie in Rosenwald Event
In last night's session of the Lessing J. Rosenwald Trophy tournament at the Manhattan Chess Club, in which adjourned games in the first four rounds were completed, Edmar Mednis won in seventy-eight moves from Abe Turner.
The victory enabled Mednis, the intercollegiate titleholder, to move into a tie with Arthur B. Bisguier, United States champion, for third place at 2½-1½.
The lead is shared by Arthur Feuerstein and Samuel Reshevsky at 3-1. They are not scheduled to play again until the fifth round on Sunday.
Donald Byrne resigned his fourth-round game with Max Pavey, Manhattan Club champion, after forty-three moves. Pavey, at 2-2, tied Byrne for fifth place.
After losing to Mednis, Turner resumed his second-round game with Bobby Fischer, winning in forty-eight moves.
The longest game of the tournament the first-round test, between Eliot Hearst and Sidney Bernstein, was drawn after ninety-three moves.
Other adjourned games will be played off this evening. It was announced that the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds would be played at the Marshall Chess Club Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
In gaining his fourth-round victory over Eliot Hearst, Reshevsky gave a revealing demonstration of his tactics. Having spent most of his time in cautious development and necessary defensive moves, he was splendidly situation to strike when both were under time limit pressure.
