Evans Wins in Montreal

Montreal, Aug 28—Larry Evans, a former United States chess champion, defeated Paul Vaitonis of Hamilton in thirty moves in the fourth round of the Canadian open chess tournament today.
The victory enabled him to remain tied for the lead with Frank Anderson of Toronto and D. A. Yanofsky of Winnipeg. All have 3-0 scores.
Anderson won from J. Rose of Montreal and Yanofsky defeated David Grimshaw, the 15-year-old Ontario junior champion.
William Lombardy of New York was held to a draw by Hans Berliner of Washington while James T. Sherwin of New York and Atillio Di Camillo of Philadelphia played seventy-four moves to a draw.
Maurice Fox of Montreal, a former Canadian champion, out-maneuvered Bobby Fischer, 13, of Brooklyn in fifty moves.
Lombardy and Sherwin are tied at 3½-½ with Berliner and Di Camillo. Fox, Sidney Bernstein, Edmar Mednis of New York and Paul Vaitonis of Hamilton all have 3-1 tallies.
Nicholas Bakos of New York is in a tie at 2½-1½ with Lionel Joyner of Montreal.
In other matches today Geza Fuster, Toronto, defeated M. Rohland, Milwaukee, and Bakos of New York defeated M. W. Schwartz, Montreal. E. S. Jackson, Flushing, Queens, and Sidney Bernstein of Brooklyn, W. G. Drakert of New York and Lionel Joyner of Montreal, and Mednis and W. Szabo of Montreal played draws.
