Reshevsky Beats Fischer In Chess; Takes Undisputed Lead in Tourney When Rival, 13, Oversteps Time Limit
Samuel Reshevsky, a child chess marvel when he arrived here from Poland at the age of 8, last night defeated Bobby Fischer, 13 years old, to take the lead in the sixth round of the Lessing J. Rosenwald Trophy tournament at the Marshall Chess Club. Reshevsky's score is 5—1.
Fischer, ordinarily a fast player, overstepped the time limit after thirty-one moves. This meant forfeiture of the game, although the boy had held his own fairly well against his world-famous opponent on the black side of a King's Indian defense.
Fischer, a student at Erasmus Hall High School, Brooklyn, has yet to win a game in the tournament.
Arthur Feuerstein, tied with Reshevsky after five rounds, lost in twenty-five moves to Abe Turner in a King's Indian defense. Feuerstein was tied at 4-2 for second place by Donald Byrne of Ann Arbo, Mich. Byrne defeated Eliot Hearst of New York, president of the Intercollegiate Chess League.
Turner's victory brought about a triple tie at 3-2 between himself, Sidney Bernstein and Edmar Mednis. Bernstein won from Herbert Seidman, the Marshall Club champion, and Mednis drew with Arthur Bisguier, the United States champion.
A draw in twenty-five moves was recorded between Max Pavey, Manhattan Chess Club champion, and George Shainswit.
The score of Reshevsky's game with Fischer follows:
