Evans Beats Fox In 50-Move Game
Wins Again for a 2-0 Score in Canadian Open Chess Tourney at Montreal
Montreal, Aug. 26 (Canadian Press)—Few upsets were recorded today in the second round of the Canadian open chess championship.
Larry Evans of New York defeated Maurice Fox of Montreal for his second point today after beating B. P. Kozak of Sudbury, Ont., in the opening round yesterday.
Evans, playing black, engaged Fox for 3 hours 35 minutes before the former Canadian champion resigned on the fiftieth move.
Experience told in the match between 13-year-old Bobby Fischer of Brooklyn and Robert Sobel of Philadelphia. Sobel won in twenty-seven moves. Fischer beat Gerard Lepine, 17, of Montreal, in the opening round.
Players with perfect two-point scores include: Pavolis Vaitonis, Hamilton, Ont.; Hans Berliner, Washington; William Lombardy, New York; Lionel Joyner, Montreal; Atillio Di Camillo, Philadelphia; Edmar Mednis, New York, and James Sherwin, New York.
