Montreal, Sept. 2—Larry Evans of New York, the former United States champion, tonight captured the first Canadian Chess Federation open championship at McGill University.
By drawing with James T. Sherwin of New York in ninety-six moves, Evans finished with a score of 8-2. This was matched with William Lombardy of New York, who drew in fourteen moves with Paul Vaitonis of Hamilton. The tie-breaking calculations gave a winning margin to Evans.
Sherwin shared third place with Edmar Mednis of New York. Atillio Di Camillo of Philadelphia, Vaitonis and Lionel Joyner of Montreal, all at 7½-2½.
Bobby Fischer, 13, of Brooklyn, scored 7—3 to tie Frank Anderson, the champion of Canada, and D. A. Yanofsky of Winnipeg.
William G. Drakert of New York had a score of 6-3½. Sidney Bernstein of Brooklyn tied at 6-4 with Hans Berliner of Washington and Ray Krznaric of Sudbury.
