National Chess Champ in Lead
Arthur Bisguier, U.S. national champion and first-seeded player in Oklahoma City's United States Chess Federation open tournament, broke his first-place tie with Robert Steinmeyer of St. Louis Thursday night, beating Steinmeyer for the lead in a two and a half hour match.
The struggle between the two was considered the highlight match of the tourney and lifted Bisguier into an undisputed lead over the field with a total of 8½ points.
Now in No. 2 spot is James Sherwin, the meet's second-seeded player, and Steinmeyer was dropped to a third place tie with Edmar Mednis of New York. Bobby Fischer, the 13-year-old chess expert, moved into a tie for fourth position in the tourney by defeating Orest Popovych, a Lakewood, N.J. master player.
